St Margarets Bay Area, NS — As everyone prepares for Halloween on October 31st, your local RCMP and Tantallon Citizens On Patrol (COP) are reminding everyone that a few simple precautions can help make Halloween both safe and fun.
For children and parents, being visible and staying alert around vehicles is essential. Make costumes bright and reflective by adding reflective tape or accessories. Also consider face paint or makeup instead of vision-restricting masks.
Children should carry a flashlight or glow stick and stay in well-lit areas whenever possible. Before heading out, parents and guardians should discuss the planned route with children and establish a return time.
When crossing streets, children should stop, look both ways, and make sure it is safe before crossing. Don’t run! Families are encouraged to avoid repeatedly crossing the street, especially hastily. Instead, travel along one side before returning along the other side. Drivers must slow down with increased pedestrian activity.
Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. The most important rule for children is simple: never go anywhere with a stranger. It is okay to say “NO,” move away, and find a trusted adult if someone makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Children should know how to contact their parents or guardians and, whenever possible, carry a charged cellphone.
Parents should also talk to children about what to do if they become separated from their group. Rather than wandering around looking for someone, children should go to a safe, well-lit location and ask a trusted adult, police officer, or someone they know for help.
Parents should also remind children never to enter a stranger’s home or vehicle while trick-or-treating. Once children return home, an adult should inspect their treats before they are eaten. Discard any treats that appear damaged, opened, or otherwise questionable.
We all need to look out for one another this Halloween. Report suspicious persons or activities to the non-emergency number 902-490-5020, but if you believe someone is in danger, please call 911.
From your local RCMP and Tantallon COP volunteers, stay safe, have fun, and have a happy Halloween!
